Historically, the Bureau of Land Management has prioritized oil and gas development over conservation. But that could soon change. Last week, the agency finalized the Public Lands Rule that enables it to put conservation on equal footing across the 245 million acres it oversees. https://pew.org/3w50he0

Leaders from Arnold Ventures, The Bridgespan Group, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation joined us to discuss the role of philanthropy in supporting nonpartisan policy change. One key takeaway? Start with the states. The state level "is more conducive to experimentation, to reform, to collaboration," said Laura Arnold of Arnold Ventures. 💡Get the full event recap for more insights on how philanthropic efforts can help guide data-driven policy solutions in the long-term. #PhilanthropyImpact #USPolicy #SocialImpact #CommunityEngagement

After several intense days at Our Ocean last week, where our location in Athens was a daily reminder of humanity's connection to the sea, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on progress made in marine conservation. There is much to celebrate. Greece has shown leadership in the EU and the Mediterranean, becoming the first EU country to ban bottom trawling within marine protected areas (MPAs) by 2026 and committing to a further two MPAs. Glad to hear Germany's following this path with commitments to ban bottom trawling as well. There were great announcements from #DominicanRepublic, #Argentina and #Azores committing to protect 30% of their waters towards the #30x30 target, and from #EuropeanUnion which made 40 commitments for action coupled with substantial funding. Youth leaders shared powerful stories to explain their commitment to ocean awareness and action, truly inspiring! It was also the occasion to hold a number of bilaterals with government officials to advance ocean protection in the three regions where #pewbertarellioceanlegacy works: The Mediterranean, the Eastern Tropical Pacific region and the Southern Ocean. My highlight of the conference was the pledge, together with Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco and other public and private donors, to fund marine conservation in the Mediterranean. Many of my partners, from #pewenvironment to Global Fishing Watch, Mission Blue / Sylvia Earle Alliance, IUCN and Rewilding Argentina were present, too, and many more ocean champions. There is still much to do. Action by many more countries around the world is needed to reach #30x30 by designating fully or highly protected MPAs within their waters, ratifying the UN High Seas treaty and the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, agreeing on protections in the Southern Ocean, and supporting a moratorium on deep sea mining. Here's looking forward to Our Ocean in the Republic of Korea in 2025, with hope and resolve! #pewbertarellioceanlegacy, The Pew Charitable Trusts, Our Ocean Greece United Nations, Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, Global Fishing Watch, Rewilding Argentina #OurOceanGreece #OurOcean2024 #UNOC #OurOcean2025 #OurOcean #Ocean #MarineLife #MarineConservation #Conservation #OceanConservation #Nature #SDG14 #MPAs #30x30 European Union, Facundo Manes #misionatlantico #Greece

About 28 million metric tons of plastic enter our environment each year. 🚢 That’s the equivalent of the weight of the Titanic…every day. It’s not too late to turn things around. This week, the United Nations is convening in Ottawa to continue negotiations for a global agreement to end plastic pollution. But for the deal to be effective, it must be ambitious, inclusive, and comprehensive. Here’s how they can do that. 👇 #INC4 #PlasticPollution #Microplastics #BeatPlasticPollution

Today, the Biden administration released the 2024 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, which aims to prevent suicides; identify and support people experiencing suicide risk; and support long-term recovery. We’re particularly excited to see that the Strategy shines a spotlight on the role that health care systems can play in identifying, assessing, and treating people with suicide risk, including by implementing standardized suicide screenings and safety planning. Congrats to our colleagues who have worked on this plan over the past few years, including the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center! The Pew Charitable Trusts looks forward to continuing to work with all our partners to advance suicide prevention and care. #suicideprevention #mentalhealth

Breaking: Today, President Biden issued an ambitious goal to reconnect, restore, and protect 8 million acres of wetlands and 100,000 miles of rivers and streams by 2030 and challenged states, communities, nonprofits, Tribes, and others to partner in achieving this important work. Pew is one of more than 100 entities that have accepted this challenge. We’ll continue to collaborate with states, Tribes, and others to protect these essential yet at-risk habitats that help: ✅Fight climate change ✅Support wildlife ✅Provide clean drinking water ✅Sustain local economies

Earth Day is a day to appreciate the planet we all call home and to reflect on how we can be better stewards of nature. This year’s Earth Day theme is “Plastics vs. Planet,” which draws our attention to the harms of plastics, which are widespread and often negative for wildlife, ecosystems, and human health. Fortunately, there is much that we can do to solve the plastic pollution problem, as my colleague Winnie Lau points out. And what’s so exciting at this moment is that this year the United Nations is negotiating an international agreement to end plastic pollution. The Pew Charitable Trusts, as part of their #broadband access initiative, recently reviewed each state's broadband office list of barriers to deployment. "One issue, however, was mentioned in virtually every plan, the perennial asterisk on every infrastructure project’s timeline: cumbersome permitting processes." This article dives into some of those #permitting challenges and how states are working to help solve some of those issues. #internetforall #connectivity

"Our planet is awash in plastic. This ubiquitous human creation has been found in the most remote locations — from the North Pole to Antarctica and from the highest slopes of Mount Everest to the Mariana Trench, the deepest place in the ocean." 🌎 This Earth Day, let's commit to a future where plastics no longer threaten our planet. As countries continue negotiations tomorrow in Ottawa to develop a United Nations treaty to end plastic pollution, I'm sharing my The Hill op-ed, where I dive into the plastic pollution problem—and how we can solve it. https://lnkd.in/dVN-5xyV #INC4 #PlasticPollution #BeatPlasticPollution #EarthDay
