Grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) offer a promising near-term solution for transmission congestion, and can create a more reliable grid, increase uptake of renewable energy, and save ratepayers money. In 2024, at least 10 states have considered or passed legislation to advance deployment of GETs. Maureen Quinlan and I took a look at the role GETs can play for the grid and the different policy approaches state lawmakers are taking to spur their adoption. https://lnkd.in/eh9Qkgqp

Black youth suicide rates are climbing – surpassing their White peers for the first time in 2022. And from 2007 to 2020, the suicide rate rose 144% among 10-to-17-year-olds who are Black. This data raises alarms about the urgent need to improve and address mental health care in Black communities. What can health care providers do to help? According to The Pew Charitable Trusts, increase cultural competency, expand the use of suicide screening tools, and conduct more research to understand risk factors. https://pew.org/4btmYaZ #MentalHealth #BehavioralHealth #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

For years, the housing needs of Philadelphians have simmered at near-crisis levels. Families, both new to the city and those who have lived there for generations, have grappled with myriad challenges including cost burden, which is a household spending more than 30% of its income on housing; mounting repair needs; homelessness; and an overall shortage in housing supply. In this Op-Ed, Emily Dowdall from Reinvestment Fund and Octavia Howell from The Pew Charitable Trusts dive into how local dollars, partnerships, and evaluation can advance the city’s housing agenda. https://lnkd.in/dUnCnJSm

"People ... know that on any given day, all they have to do is pick up the phone and they've got three friends that are going to come see them," says police lieutenant Brad McGary of the Community Response Teams in Abilene, Texas. These teams—which consist of a police officer, mental health specialist, and a paramedic—have seen early signs of success in both diffusing potentially volatile situations and connecting people facing a mental health crisis to care. Why is this effort needed? As our Julie Wertheimer notes, “It’s not an effective intervention to further crowd jails and ERs with people who need help with mental health. These settings often can’t handle the complex needs of people in crisis. And it’s not a cost-effective solution. New approaches, like the one Abilene is taking, are working.” https://pew.org/3QEwYGj #CrisisResponse #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

Over the past decade, The Pew Charitable Trusts has worked to increase access to substance use treatment, help health care systems better identify people at risk for suicide, and ensure people experiencing mental health crises receive health-first responses. It's important work that I'm proud to be a part of. Sometimes it feels like our work will never end. No doubt you’ve seen the headlines: Children and teens are in crisis. Overdose deaths and suicides are rising. People with mental illnesses are too often incarcerated rather than offered medical services. We’re often asked by friends who work on other policy issues, how do you it? How do you think about these heavy issues every day and try to solve what increasingly feel like insurmountable problems? Our answer is always the same: How could we not? As Mental Health Awareness Month kicks off, I explain why we can't turn our backs on these issues—and why telling the stories of those who are affected is so important to driving change. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

Such a big deal for Indigenous communities, the wildlife that calls this incredible area, and our entire planet. Perhaps my amazing colleague, Suzanne Little, says it best: “The western Arctic is one of the largest contiguous swaths of public lands in the U.S., representing a unique opportunity to conserve land and wildlife on an unprecedented scale while meeting our nation’s climate commitments, sustaining biodiversity, and protecting Indigenous peoples’ subsistence way of life for generations to come." https://lnkd.in/eURCHCiZ

Property tax relief is high on the agenda of many lawmakers from states in the Mountain West, where property values have skyrocketed in part because of an influx of residents from the East and West coasts. This escalation in real estate costs has resulted in rapidly rising property tax bills for millions of people in states such as Colorado and Montana. States have at times considered offsetting property tax breaks by increasing another revenue stream, such as sales taxes. But as the flow of revenue slows in many states, lawmakers are seeking more sustainable solutions to these property tax issues. Learn how policymakers are addressing high property taxes from Riley Judd, state fiscal policy associate at The Pew Charitable Trusts, below. https://lnkd.in/eV2zNTTg

As Mental Health Awareness Month begins, I’m reflecting on the progress we have seen in the nearly two years since the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline went live. Communities are taking steps to improve collaboration between 911 and 988, reduce wait times, and increase funding to improve data on mental health. And now we have an opportunity to better connect people who are experiencing #mentalhealth crises to local care through a proposed new federal rule. Take a look. 👇 #MHAM2024 #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth
